Picturesque Barnsley Resort is located a little over 60 miles from Atlanta in quaint Adairsville. Even though you’ll travel barely an hour to reach its scenic entrance, you’ll feel transported. It’s sprawling yet quaint, and luxurious yet pastoral. The perfect balance of rustic elegance. The property — which expands 3,000 acres — features a Jim Fazio-designed golf course, Beretta shooting grounds, horseback riding trails, fishing opportunities and a newly renovated spa. It’s also home to historic ruins and gardens, several eateries and cozy communal fire pits. Barnsley has always been known for its private luxury cottages, but the resort recently debuted a 55-room inn making it ideal for weekend wanderlusters. If you’re craving a winter getaway, plan to escape to Barnsley Resort where Southern charm and hospitality reign.

The Accommodations

While the cottages at Barnsley Resort have earned a long-standing reputation for being private yet luxurious, the inn is the resort’s latest and most noteworthy addition. Entering the stately doors, you’ll be taken by the warmth that exudes from the rich wood finishes, antique-inspired furniture and even the staff. A communal fireplace with cozy seating invites guests to gather before making their way around the pedestrian-friendly resort for various activities and meals. This space is also where you’ll find a nightly s’mores station. Guests can create personal s’mores packets to enjoy by any of the property’s outdoor fire pits encircled with Adirondack chairs.

The rooms themselves are well-appointed and spacious, with several overlooking the grounds. Photography of the surrounding property rests on the walls while plush linens summon relaxation. If you’ve visited Barnsley Resort’s many cottages in the past, don’t let your comfort zone deter you from booking a stay at the inn. The rooms are generous and the ambiance is serene. Plus, the convenient location can’t be beat. You’re steps from the twinkling lights of the beer garden or a quick golf cart escort to other resort amenities.

The Food

Farm to table — or as the property likes to say, “garden to table” — takes on an entirely new meaning here. Many of the culinary experiences are hallmarked by the use of locally grown vegetables and herbs and regionally sourced proteins. The chefs at each of the eateries utilize fresh area ingredients to make plates as visually appealing as they are appetizing. For a fine dining experience, make a reservation at the Rice House. There, within the walls of a 19th century farmhouse, you’ll enjoy a constantly changing menu prepared by Chef de Cuisine Evan Babb and team. Dishes like the cornbread skillet with country ham butter lead to entrees like ribeye with hollandaise and braised rabbit with Barnsley grown greens. For more casual yet equally delightful dining digs, head to Woodlands Grill which overlooks the golf course. There, don’t miss the restaurant’s aptly named colossal onion rings.

For daytime dining, head to the casual, outdoor beer garden. The beer garden menu is filled with humble yet tasty BBQ-inspired selections. Snacks include pimento cheese with house pickles, classic Brunswick Stew (a Georgia staple) and boiled peanuts. Traditional sandwiches like pulled pork and smoked brisket also have their place on the menu while carb-conscious visitors can feast on the smoked chicken plate. Be sure to start your day with one of the beer garden’s biscuit specialties or make your way back there early afternoon for happy hour. The centrally located spot is always buzzing with food and soon-to-be friends. Ultimately, Barnsley Resort offers a range of eating options for a variety of palates and price points.

The Experience

While the food and the accommodations are highlights of a Barnsley Resort getaway, nothing beats the impeccable experience that awaits. Friendly, overly-attentive staff answer every burning question or request with a smile. They are eager to tell the tales of the resort while inviting you to make memories of your own. They know returning guests by name and notice preferences — even down to drink selections.

Activities throughout the resort allow you to not only see the entire property, but experience it as well. Guided horseback rides occur daily and offer a glimpse at what life might have been like in generations previous. Before mounting your horse at the stables, be sure to visit all of the farm animals. Cute cows and baby pigs were among the favorites. Guided nature walks, fitness classes and family movies are also a part of weekly activities. Of course, a tour through the historic ruins and gardens is a must-do, too. You can almost feel the energy of bygone inhabitants. Sports enthusiasts can try their hand at golf, clay shooting or fly fishing. If pampering is on your agenda, you won’t want to miss a chance to treat yourself to the spa where serenity awaits. The peaceful, co-ed lounge space is perfect for unplugging and unwinding. At the top of our treatment list? The relaxing sticks and stones massage.
