“Your mission, should you choose to accept it…”
It has been 22 years to the day, since Tom Cruise first chose to accept a mission for the Mission Impossible franchise and has never looked back.
After raking in over $790 million for the sixth instalment, Cruise is now geared up for the seventh and eighth instalment that are to be released in 2021 and ‘22 respectively.
From embracing the need for speed in Tony Scott’s Top Gun (1986) to being a hardass prosecutor in the Aaron Sorkin-scripted A Few Good Men (1992) and the loveable sports agent in 1996s Jerry Maguire, Cruise has always done pivotal roles in movies that have made him our celebrity crush.
But he is not just known for his antics on screen. Cruise has made the headlines for his actions over the years ever since he began his career in a small role in Endless Love (1981). Cruise has done everything from jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s couch in 2005 to suing a gay porn actor and being the most talked about celebrity for his height and choice of footwear.
In a career spanning over 35 years, Cruise has become one of the biggest celebrities/movie stars in the world, so much so, that Japan has earmarked a day in his honour. So 10th October is Tom Cruise day in Japan since 2006. Why? Because he is the only Western celebrity to visit Japan multiple times and has made a movie, ‘The Last Samurai’, based on the long lost customs of Japan.
But that is not all.
If television star Leah Remini is to be believed, Cruise’s association with the ambiguous religious cult, Scientology, is one of the best kept secrets in the world.
Remini, who claims to have been a former member of Scientology, joined the Church when she was nine-years-old and spent most of her life associated with it until she broke away in 2013 and has been an outspoken critic of theirs since.
Cruise is said to be an outspoken supporter of Scientology ever since he was introduced to it by his first wife Mimi Rogers in 1990.
But Cruise has lost much in his life since then.
He has been married twice post his marriage to Rogers. To actresses Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes. And he is divorced from both as well. But both the actresses have chosen to remain tight-lipped about their lives with Cruise.
It is rumoured that the management of Scientology has forbidden Cruise to have any contact with his daughter Suri, whom he had with Katie Holmes. It is said that Cruise has not met Suri in four years.
Then comes Remini’s allegations that Cruise metes out vile punishment to all those who disrespect the teachings of the Church, something that Cruise vehemently denies. But, Cruise has been unable to leave the Church as well.
It is said Cruise has tried to leave the Church twice before, once to save his marriage to Kidman and on the second occasion, to save his marriage to Holmes. But he has been unable to do so, though there are always rumours abound that he is leaving them soon.
