Often referred to as “one of the healthiest diets”, the Mediterranean Diet includes plentiful fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil. Fish and poultry are given preference over red meat. What’s more, red wine is also recommended to be consumed regularly in small amounts. Fitness enthusiasts mostly opt for the 7-day Mediterranean diet meal plan.
Recent research says that the diet can lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart attack, improve sleep quality and help lose weight.
According to the American Heart Association, the average Mediterranean diet encompasses a high percentage of calories from monounsaturated fats. Henceforth, people who need to limit their fat intake should stay away from this diet chart.
Dr Charu Dua, Head of Department- Nutrition & Dietetics, Max Super Speciality Hospital says, “Mediterranean diet is inspired by food habits of people surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. The diet is generally characterised by high intake of plant food such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and olive oil, moderate intake of fish and low intake of dairy products, red meat, processed meat and sweets.
Calling the diet plan “healthy”, she adds, “The diet is healthy but one challenge that is common among patients in day-to-day practice is that they may adopt one thing from a diet, for example, they may adopt olive oil or fish but will not drop red meat, sweet or processed food.”
She also warns that to show proper results, any diet needs to be followed under the supervision of a dietician. “I also believe that at times, the diet may work in the Mediterranean Sea region but not in India. People should follow food habits according to what suits their body type,” Dua adds.
